Multitasking - Who Does It Benefit?

Hello, my friends, I hope you're doing well. In this video, I'm going to talk about multitasking. Does multitasking benefit you? Or does it benefit someone else? If you're new here, hello, my name is Tonya and I make videos on practical and functional planning. So, on this channel, I do a lot of planner reviews. And a lot of times we use our planner so we can manage the multiple responsibilities and our life.

At first, I thought I was using my planner so that I can multitask effectively. But when I really started thinking about that word multitasking, I'm not sure that I see the benefit in it. So let me just show you my plan or while I'm talking here, here's one of my spreads. This is a daily planner; this is a day and this is a day.

So, when I was thinking about multitasking, multitasking means the ability to be able to do multiple things at one time. And if you really think about it doing multiple things at one time, what value does that bring to you? Well, I don't see the value in it. Because when I try to do multiple things at one time, I end up not being able to do anything great to do something great to do one task great, all your concentration, everything about you needs to be about that task.

Why is the word multitasking so popular? I started thinking about this when I went to college and we were graduating, the college told us about things to say in an interview so that we can get a job with an employer. We were told to tell the employer, “I'm good at multitasking”. When you think about that multitasking really just benefits the employer because of course, nobody wants to hire someone and they do one thing at a time and they're slow, and you don't get as much work out of them.

So, my conclusion is, I think multitasking kind of benefits employers because they want as much productivity as possible out of their employees. Does it benefit you trying to do multiple things? I think it leads to more stress. Because when you try to do lots of things, it can make you feel unfocused and frazzled, then when you make mistakes, you feel bad about that. And it just leads and it tumbles into more and more stress. That can over time have an impact on your health and your well-being.

What I call multitasking is I run and I build a lot of like reports for our finance department, when I'm running one report while that report is running in the background, then I may go to an email, look at that email. If I have a question, sendoff that question. And while I'm waiting for the response, I moved to something else. I might work tickets because we get tickets in our department when something's broken or not working correctly. So, then I'll do that. But I try to do each thing to the best of my ability one at a time.

I think another disadvantage of multitasking is that it's hard to prioritize what's most important because you're trying to do everything.

So, when I'm like that when I have a lot of responsibilities and a lot of things that I got to do, this is how I prioritize:

I prioritize according to my values, or at least I tried to. So, what do I value? I value people, I value my family, because it's all important. You're one person you can't do but so much at one time, that's how I prioritize.

Sometimes I get that question from people, “Well, when you have a lot to do, Tonya, what do you do to prioritize?” I do what I value first before everything else.

So, this week's video is just really quick. It's just a little rant about how I feel about multitasking because it just happened to be on my mind. Please let me know in the comments what you think about multitasking, I think that it is glorified in this world. I think that people glorify people that are able to multitask. I truly feel that it's overrated, and I feel that it's much better to focus on one task at a time so that you can do it with more quality and do it more effectively. Please don't forget to like this video. This is Tonya, helping you feel more organized so this can be your best year yet. Take care
